The invention refers to the use of a strain of Lactobacillus in particular Lactobacillus plantarum 299 (DSM 6595) or Lactobacillus plantarum 299 v (DSM 9843), giving to rise or increased amounts of propionic acid or acetic acid in colon for the preparation of a medicament reducing the risk factors involved in the metabolic syndrome, especially increasing the level of HDL cholesterol in serum, and reducing the levels of LDL, insulin and leptin, as well as a high blood pressure.

L'invention concerne l'utilisation d'une souche de Lactobacillus, en particulier de Lactobacillus plantarum 299 (DSM 6595) ou de Lactobacillus plantarum 299 v (DSM 9843), donnant lieu à augmentation, ou à des quantités accrues, d'acides propionique ou acétique dans le colon, pour la préparation d'un médicament qui permet de réduire les facteurs de risque associés au syndrome métabolique, d'augmenter spécialement le taux de cholestérol HDL dans le sérum, et de réduire les taux de LDL, d'insuline et de leptine, tout autant qu'une tension artérielle élevée.
