Methods for cancer chemosensitization are provided. Texaphyrins are new chemosensitizers for enhancing the cytotoxicity of chemotherapeutic agents. The enhancement appears to be P-glycoprotein- independent since texaphyrins are effective in both a P- glycoprotein-expressing and a P-glycoprotein-nonexpressing cell line. Methods are provided for the treatment of cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, carcinoma, and sarcoma using a texaphyrin as a chemosensitizer.

L'invention porte sur des procédés de chimiosensibilisation associés au traitement du cancer et recourant à des texaphyrines, nouveaux chimiosensibilisateurs qui renforcent la cytotoxicité des agents chimiothérapeutiques. Ce renforcement semble indépendant de la P-glycoprotéine puisque les texaphyrines s'avèrent efficaces à la fois sur les lignées de cellules exprimant ou n'exprimant pas la P-glycoprotéine. L'invention porte également sur des méthodes de traitement de cancers tels que la leucémie, le lymphome, le carcinome et le sarcome, dans lesquelles la texaphyrine est utilisée comme chimiosensibilisateur.
