Use of branched chain amino acids for the preparation of a beverage or instant mixture thereof for improving the physical and/or mental performance during strenuous physical activity and for delaying physical and mental exhaustion due to physical activity as well as to improve recovery, in an amount corresponding to 2 to 40 g/l of the ready-to-drink beverage, said beverage further comprising from 0 to 750 g/l of the ready-to-drink beverage of oligosaccharides and from 0 to 55 g/l of the ready-to-drink beverage of monosaccharides. The beverage or instant mixture comprising branched-chain amino acids and mono- and/or oligosaccharides. A method of improving the physical and/or mental performance during strenuous physical activity and for delaying physical and mental exhaustion due to physical activity as well as to im- prove recovery by ingestion of a ready-to-drink beverage.
