S U M M A R Y O F T H E I N V E N T I O N An aqueous system is used as water for fire fighting, comprising an aqueous phase having dispersed therein gel particles swollen by hydration having a diameter of from 0.1 to 3 mm comprising individual moderately cross-linked water-insoluble polar macromolecules of acrylic acid derivatives. The gel particles are present in an amount of from 0.1 to 0.6% by weight, calculated as dry substance and based on the aqueous phase, and the aqueous system has a viscosity of below 100 mPa's
