The invention discloses a novel approach for the determination of target molecules in a mixture through the use of an oscillating system. The oscillating system is stimulated by the enzyme horseradish peroxidase with oxygen as the oscillating substrate. Differences in the activity or concentration of peroxidase present in the reaction can be reliably and sensitively measured with a resolution of 5 nM (peroxidase concentration). Biotinylated peroxidase can be substituted for non-biotinylated peroxidase and the sensitivity of this system is maintained at the same 5 nM level. The stimulation of the system can be modulated through a second factor through the addition of streptavidin, and the binding of this molecule to the biotin labeled peroxidase. The binding of streptavidin to biotinylated peroxidase provides a bridge between peroxidase activity and the concentration of any specified target molecule.
