The use of azo dyes of the formula (I) in which ring A can be benzoanellised, n is 0 or 1, R1 is hydrogen or possibly substituted C1-C5 Alkyl, R2 is possibly substituted C1-C15 alkyl, R3, R4, R5, R6 and R7 are hydrogen, C1-C15 alkyl or C1-C15 alkoxy, and R8 is hydrogen, C1-C15 alkyl, C1-C15 alkoxy, cyano, nitro or a carboxyl radical which may be esterified, as pH-dependent markers for hydrocarbons, hydrocarbons containing said azo dyes, a process for detecting said azo dyes in hydrocarbons and novel azo dyes.
