Abstract of the Disclosure Disclosed herein are compositions comprising a) at least one 3-isothiazolone of the formula (I) Image (I) wherein Y is an unsubstituted or substituted (C1 - C18) alkyl, an unsubstituted or substituted (C3 - C12) cycloalkyl, an unsubstituted or halogen-substituted (C2-C8) alkenyl or alkynyl, an unsubstituted or substituted (C7-C10) aralkyl, or an unsubstituted or substituted aryl; and R and R1 is each independently H, halogen or (C1-C4) alkyl; and b) a carbonyl compound selected from the group consisting of (C2-C6) aldehydes, (C7-C10) aromatic aldehydes or acids, (C2-C4) dialdehydes, (C1-C12) acids, (C2 - C8) diacids, triacids or tetracids, (C3-C10) .alpha.,.beta. unsaturated carbonyls, (C1-C6) haloamides of the formula Image where R1 = phenyl or (C1-C4)alkyl, substituted phenyl, R2 = (C1-C7)alkyl, (C1-C7)alkoxylalkyl, or (C1-C7)carbalkoxyalkyl; X1, X2, X3 = H or halogen wherein at least one X is halogen; furfural, dibutylene furfural and maleimides of the formula Image where R" is H, (C1-C4) alkyl or aryl; provided that when (b) is selected from the group consisting of aldehydes and dialdehydes the ratio (b):a) is less than 10:1.
