Methods of promoting stem cell proliferation comprising contacting the cells with cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1) are provided. The methods may further comprise contacting the stem cells with one or more stem cell modulators that promote differentiation of the stem cells. Methods of inhibiting stem cell proliferation comprising contacting the cells with one or more CT-1 inhibitor are also provided. The methods can be used to promote or inhibit stem cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Therapeutic applications of the methods in the replacement of damaged or defective tissue or in the inhibition of inappropriate cell proliferation are also provided.

L'invention porte sur des procédés pour favoriser la prolifération des cellules souches en les mettant en contact avec la cardiotrophine-1 (CT-1). Selon ce procédé, on peut également mettre les cellules souches en contact avec l'un au moins des modulateurs des cellules souches qui favorisent la différentiation des cellules souches. L'invention porte également sur des procédés pour inhiber la prolifération des cellules souches en les mettant en contact avec l'un au moins des inhibiteurs de la CT-1. Ces procédés conviennent particulièrement pour favoriser ou inhiber la prolifération des cellules souches in vitro ou in vivo. L'invention porte aussi sur des applications thérapeutiques de ces procédés, soit pour remplacer des tissus endommagés ou défectueux, soit pour inhiber la prolifération de cellules inappropriées.
