The invention relates to the use of catechol derivatives of general formula (I), wherein R1 to R5 have the meanings as cited in Claim No. 1, as proteinase inhibitors. The catechol derivatives are especially used for treating diseases from the group of rheumatoid arthritis, periodontitis, arteriosclerotic plaques, osteoporosis, arthrosis, matastatic spread, neoangiogenesis of tumors, ulceration of the cornea, and skin reactions resulting from exposure to UV radiation.
