ABSTRACT An additive for use with a water-in-oil emulsion type drilling fluid to reduce the viscosity of the fluid to a desired range comprising a selected fatty acid polyester. The fatty acid polyester is derived from a hydroxycarboxylic acid of the formula HO-X-COOH wherein X is a divalent saturated or unsaturated aliphatic radical containing at least 8 carbon atoms or from a mixture of such a hydroxy- carboxylic acid and a carboxylic acid free from hydroxy an amount sufficient to reduce the viscosity of the fluid to a desired range without the necessity of diluting the drilling fluid. The fatty acid polyester preferably is admixed with the emulsion type drilling fluid in an amount of from about 0.1 to about 1 pound per barrel of fluid.
