The present invention was made as a result of discovering an entire new approach and therapeutic target of cancer therapy. In addition, a prototype inhibitor compound, 1-(11-dodecylamino-10-hydroxyundecyl)-3,7- dimethylxanthine, has been discovered that acts by inhibiting cellular accumulation of specific PA species and is an inhibitor of PC directed PLD.beta.. Accordingly, the present invention provides a method for treating and preventing the spread of cancers comprising treating a patient with a tumor with an effective amount of a compound that reduces cellular accumulation of PA4 species.
