The present invention relates to a method of sedating a patient while in the intensive care unit (ICU). The method comprises administering dexmedetomidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a patient in need thereof for a sufficient time period. Further, the present invention relates to a method of sedating a patient in the ICU by administering dexmedetomidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein dexmedetomidine is essentially the sole active agent or the sole active agent.
