The use of dimiracetam in the treatment of chronic pain is disclosed. At doses higher than those previously disclosed in relation with its cognition enhancing activity (i.e. amelioration of learning and memory), dimiracetam was able to completely revert hyperalgesia or allodynia associated with several animal models of chronic pain. Dimiracetam showed high activity in iatrogenic neuropathies associated with antiviral and chemotherapeutic drug treatments and in painful conditions caused by osteoarthritis. In addition, dimiracetam was devoid of toxicity even at doses 10-fold higher than the highest therapeutic dose. The possibility of treating such debilitating pathologies with a highly effective and essentially non-toxic compound is therefore disclosed.

La présente invention concerne l'utilisation du dimiracétam dans le cadre du traitement de la douleur chronique. A des doses supérieures à celles précédemment décrites en relation avec son activité en matière d'amélioration de la cognition (c'est-à-dire d'amélioration de l'apprentissage et de la mémorisation), le dimiracétam s'est révélé capable de venir complètement à bout de l'hyperalgésie ou de l'allodynie associées à plusieurs modèles animaux de douleur chronique. Le dimiracétam a présenté une grande efficacité dans le cadre de neuropathies iatrogènes associées à des traitements médicamenteux antiviraux et chimiothérapiques, ainsi que d'états douloureux provoqués par l'arthrose. En outre, le dimiracétam s'est révélé dénué de toxicité même à des doses dix fois supérieures à la dose thérapeutique la plus élevée. Est donc décrite ici la possibilité de traiter de telles pathologies débilitantes au moyen d'un composé hautement efficace et essentiellement non toxique.
