An improved chewing gum composition and methods for making same. Chewing gums are created having improved shelf life. To this end, the chewing gum is coated with an edible material that provides barrier properties, and specifically a moisture barrier. The coating can comprise: a multilayer coating of two or more materials (e g., a layer of an edible film forming agent and a layer of wax); a single layer of material (e.g., a layer of only edible film forming agent); or an emulsion of two or more materi- als. A variety of different coatings are possible pursuant to the present invention.
