A compound represented by: Image wherein: (a) at least one of the carbons of any of positions 4, 5, 6 or 7 is linked to a chemical moiety containing an anion group which is attached to the benzene ring; (b) the carbon at position 2 is linked to a chemical moiety, X, comprised of at least 2 atoms; (c) a nitrogen atom is located at position 3; (d) a sulfur atom is located at position 1; and (e) a chemical moiety attached to said anion group of subpart (a) which inhibits fluorescence; wherein upon removal of said chemical moiety of subpart (e), the resulting compound is fluorescent. These compounds are useful in fluorescent substrates and in biological assays.
