Abstract The invention relates to the use of formamidine sulfinic acid as an oxygen scavenger, preferably in aqueous systems in the alkaline pH range. Formamidine sulrinic acid is effective at low temperatures and does not require the presence of catalytically active metals. Formamidine sulrinic acid is eminently suitable for the removal of dissolved oxygen from cyanide leaching solutions containing noble metals before the noble metal is precipitated there- from with zinc.
