The invention relates to the use of G-CSF for the treatment of cerebral stroke, in particular cerebral stroke having an initial large infarct volume. The administration of G-CSF in a total dose of 30 to 180 µg per kg of body weight over a treatment time of approximately 3 days is suitable for the treatment of stroke. The treatment according to the invention using a total dose of 80 to 150 µg per kg of body weight is preferred.
