The use is described of graft polymers of ketone-aldehyde condensation products and/or ketone-aldehyde co-condensation products containing acid groups, and/or ketone-aldehyde condensation products or ketone-aldehyde co-condensation products containing univalent or polyvalent metal compounds of acid groups as means for retarding the setting of aqueous binder suspensions based on cement, gypsum or anhydrite, in which the condensation product consists a) of symmetrical or asymmetrical ketones with aliphatic, araliphatic, cyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon moieties with at least one nonaromatic moiety, b) of an aldehyde of the formula R-(CHO)n wherein n can be equal to 1 to 2 and R equal to hydrogen, an aliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic moiety, onto which anionic and/or nonionic and/or cationic unsaturated monomers have been grafted. Due to their good thermostability these graft polymers do not lose their good retardant properties even at comparatively high temperatures.
