2080484 9116391 PCTABS00007 The description relates to the use of hydrated castor oil instead of organophilic quaternised clays to control and especially to increase the viscosity spontaneously in oil-based drilling muds for opening geological processes. The object of the invention also includes oil-based drilling muds of this kind which contain hydrated castor oil, together, if desired, with further known N-free viscosity promoters as oil soluble viscosity promoters and are free from oil-dispersible, finely dispersed solids containing quaternised N compounds, especially correspondingly fortified clays.
