The present invention identifies essentially all of the members of a specific group of genes that are preferentially transcribed upon the initialization of a signal transduction pathway. The present invention also discloses methods for detecting and/or quantifying the transcription of these specific genes. The present invention further discloses methods of using this information to characterize the effect of potential drugs on a cell. Solid supports comprising nucleic acids tha can hybridize with the transcripts from this specific group of genes are also described.
