A downhole caliper instrument (10) utilizing a linear or arcuate magneto- resistive sensor (24) to determine the position of one or more caliper arms (11 or 111) which extend from a carrier tool (22) to touch the surface of a borehole wall (20). A processor and firmware are included to calculate and plot the borehole radius. A plurality of magneto-resistive sensors (24, 102) are provided to calculate the sine, cosine and tangent for accurate motion of each independent arm (11, 111). The magneto-resistive sensors (24, 102) sense the position of a precise magnetic ruler (94) linked to the caliper arm (11, 111). The position of the caliper arm (11, 111) determines the radius of the borehole. Calculation of Radius/Diameter is preferably performed in the computer on the surface. The downhole controller's firmware controls the multiplexer switching, A/D conversion and other functions.
L'invention concerne un instrument (10) de diamétrage de fond utilisant un détecteur (24) magnétorésistif linéaire ou arqué pour déterminer la position d'un ou de plusieurs bras (11 ou 111) de diamétrage qui s'étendent depuis un outil (22) support et touchent la surface d'une (20) paroi de trou de sonde. Un processeur et un micrologiciel inclus permettent de calculer et de tracer le rayon du trou de sonde. Une pluralité de détecteurs (24, 102) magnétorésistifs servent à calculer sinus, cosinus et tangente en vue d'un déplacement précis de chaque bras (11, 111) indépendant. Les détecteurs (24, 102) magnétorésistifs détectent la position à l'aide d'une règle (94) magnétique précise reliée au bras (11, 111) de diamétrage. La position du bras (11, 111) de diamétrage détermine le rayon du trou de sonde. Le calcul du rayon/diamètre est de préférence mis en oeuvre par un ordinateur situé en surface. Le micrologiciel de l'organe de commande de fond commande la commutation du multiplexeur, la conversion A/N ainsi que d'autres fonctions.
