A method for improving the growth characteristics of plants of the C3 and CAM varieties comprises applying to the roots of the plants an aqueous solution containing methanol together with a high nitrogen fertilizer. The fertilizer comprises an N-P-K fertilizer having a high nitrogen content, preferably a 24- 6-6 value, in which the nitrogen component is provided principally by ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate and ammonium phosphate. Use of urea as a nitrogen source in the fertilizer formulation is essentially avoided. Greatly improved growth characteristics have been demonstrated in comparative experimental tests with a large variety of C3 and CAM family fruits, vegetables, flowering plants and trees.

Cette technique visant à améliorer les caractéristiques de croissance de plantes appartenant aux variétés C¿3? et CAM consiste à appliquer sur les racines de ces plantes une solution aqueuse contenant du méthanol et un fertilisant à forte teneur en azote. Ce fertilisant, à base d'azote, de potassium et de phosphore (N-K-P), de préférence sous le rapport suivant: 24-6-6-, possède une teneur élevée en azote, cet azote étant essentiellement fourni par du nitrate d'ammonium, du nitrate de potassium et du phosphate d'ammonium. On évite pratiquement d'employer de l'urée comme source d'azote dans la préparation de ce fertilisant. Des essais expérimentaux comparatifs pratiqués sur une large variété de végétaux de la famille C¿3? et CAM, fruits, légumes, plantes à fleurs et arbres, ont montré une nette amélioration des caractéristiques de croissance.
