The invention relates to the use of sodium methylsiliconate or potassium methylsiliconate with a substrate in order to render it water-repellent, so that the said substrate allows good water retention when it is applied to a soil to be protected or when it is on a soil to be protected or so that the said substrate is impermeable to water. Between 180 and 1000 g of sodium methylsiliconate or potassium methylsiliconate are mixed per m3 of substrate.
