The use of a high potency phosphonate for increasing bone mass in a human or other mammal subject afflicted with osteoporosis, wherein the high potency phosphonate is used in a thirty day program in an amount of from 0.00001 mg P/kg to 0.1 mg P/kg of the subject per day for at least one day of the thirty day program, followed if required by a rest period of at least one day at the end of the thiry day program.
