ABSTRACT The use of surfactants in miscible and near-miscible floods for enhanced oil recovery is disclosed, wherein the selection of the surfactant used is tailored to accommodate one of two types of gas sweep problems. The first type is conventionally caused by viscous fingering, gravity override, and moderate permeability stratification, and the second type is conventionally known caused by highly conductive thief zones. The surfactants are generally certain alkyl ethoxy and/or propoxy sulfonates or sulfates, or alpha-olefin sulfonates.
