The present invention relates to a method of using protective compounds for the prevention or treatment of ophthalmic diseases, disorders or injuries in a subject. The method comprises the step of administering a pre-determined polycyclic phenolic compound to a subject in need thereof. The polycyclic phenolic compound is selected from those having at least one terminal phenolic group and at least one other cyclic group.
