Disclosed is a layer-by-layer process for producing a three-dimensional object in which a region of a layer of a polymer powder is selectively melted via introduction of electromagnetic energy and then cooled to harden. In a process, an aliphatic polyester powder is used which is prepared from an alcohol and from a diacid with no use of any aromatic monomer unit. The polyester powder has a high crystallinity and a low melting point. This makes the process more reliable while component quality is good, in particular with respect to mechanical properties, and also density, dimensional accuracy, and low shrinkage.
