A B S T R A C T A process for the preparation of anhydrous magnesium chloride herein magnesium chloride hydrate is separated from water by forming a slurry of the hydrate in the dibutyl ether of tetraethylene glycol. The slurry is dried by azeotropic removal of water, and the hydrate precipitata taken up into ethylene glycol. Pure anhydrous magnesium chloride is reco- vered from the ethylene glycol solution via its ammonium complex. This process has the advantage over the known process, which uses the diethyl ether of tetraethylene glycol, that the dibutyl ether is not soluble in ethylene glycol, thus simplifying the process.
