A description is given of the use of pyridoxine derivatives and salts thereof, more particularly pyridoxal, pyridoxal phosphate, pyridoxamine and pyridoxamine phosphate, in the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidaemia and atherosclerosis. This excludes pyridoxine-5'-phosphoric acid ester glutamate and aspartate which are described in DE 24 61 742 C2. The resulting substances are natural, well tolerated, with a clearly defined chemical composition, sufficiently stable, and effective in long-term treatment. The buccal application form and the form resistant to gastric juice are especially advantageous.
