The invention concerns the use as thickening agent in optionally pigmented aqueous formulations, such as coating formulations like paints in aqueous phase, for example dispersion paints, varnishes, paper coating slips, cosmetic formulations, detergent formulations, textile formulations and drilling sludge, of a water-soluble acrylic copolymer consisting of at least one ethylenically saturated monomer and having a carboxylic function, of at least one ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer, of at least one ethylenically unsaturated oxyalkylated monomer terminated by a hydrophobic and non aromatic branched chain containing 10 to 24 carbon atoms, and optionally of at least one doubly ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The invention also concerns the resulting optionally pigmented aqueous formulations.
