ABSTRACT USE OF XANTHINE DERIVATIVES FOR HOST DEFENSE MECHANISM ENHANCEMENT The present invention relates to a composition for enhancing host defense mechanisms against trauma comprising a pharmaceutical carrier and, as the active ingredient, an effective amount of a compound of the formula Image wherein R and R1 are the same or different and are lower alkyl, R3- Image , R4- Image or R5-?-(CH2)p; R2 is lower alkyl; R3 and R4 are the same or different and are hydrogen or lower alkyl; R5 is lower alkyl; and m, n and p are the same or different and are 2, 3 or 4, with the proviso that R, R1 and R2 are not simultaneously lower alkyl, and with the further pro- viso that if R1 and R2 are both methyl, R is not the group CH3-CO-(CH2)4-, or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof.
