AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention concerns a method of using an improved sorptive coal material as a treatment medium in the removal of methane gases which result from the decay of organic matter in old refuse fills, and also to inhibit the further production of the gases from such refuse fills. The method involves treating coal materials of known sorptive ability to make of them more gas sorptive and decay inhibiting treatment media, then making a coal-in-water slurry of finely ground coal and water and thereafter injecting the coal-in-water slurry into the refuse fill through drill hole therein, and passing the slurry thoughout the refuse fill under pressure so that the improved gas sorptive coal comes into contact with any gases in the fill to adsorb them, and leave a residual coating of finely ground coal within and over the refuse organic matter which serves to inhibit the further production of gases therefrom.
