ABSTRACT A wind energy device uses an airfoil section to generate a vortex at its tip, thus concentrating the wind energy incident on the leading edge of the airfoil in the tip vortex. To increase the wind energy in the vortex, a wind deflector is mounted close to the airfoil tip and is arranged so that it deflects wind incident on it into the vortex in a generally tangential direction and in the direction of rotation of the vortex. A rotary device, preferably a Savonius rotor, is mounted in the path of the vortex so as to be rotated by the wind in the vortex, and drives an electicity generator.
