A utility knife has a disposable blade cartridge (42) in its handle that has front and rear blade compartments (128, 130). Each compartment is sized to store a plurality of blades in side-by-side relation. Fresh blades are disposed in front compartment and one end of each is advanced one at a time substantially out of the compartment into operative position by a carrier (46) that is controlled by an actuator on the handle. When the active blade is to be replaced, it is moved by the carrier into the rear compartment, and a new blade may then be withdrawn from the front compartment into the operative position. The active blade when not in use is partially withdrawn into the front compartment. The cartridge is reversed when the one end of all the blades in the front compartment are used, placing what was the rear compartment at the front, and the unused end of each blade is advanced into the operative position and when used they are each moved to the rear compartment. When all are used, a new cartridge replaces the old in the knife.

L'invention concerne un couteau à usage général comprenant, dans son manche, une cartouche de lames jetables, possédant des compartiments de lames avant et arrière. Chaque compartiment est d'une taille permettant d'y placer plusieurs lames l'une contre l'autre. Des lames neuves sont disposées dans le compartiment avant et une extrémité à la fois de chaque lame est avancée, sensiblement en dehors du compartiment, en position de fonctionnement, au moyen d'un dispositif de chargement commandé par un actionneur placé sur le manche. Lorsqu'une lame active doit être remplacée, elle est déplacée à l'aide du dispositif de chargement dans le compartiment arrière, et une nouvelle lame est amenée depuis le compartiment avant en position de fonctionnement. Lorsqu'elle n'est pas utilisée, la lame active est partiellement rétractée dans le compartiment avant. La cartouche est retournée lorsque l'une des extrémités de toutes les lames est utilisée, le compartiment arrière devenant ainsi le compartiment avant, l'extrémité non utilisée de chaque lame étant ainsi avancée en position active et chaque lame utilisée étant par suite déplacée vers le compartiment arrière. Lorsque toutes les lames ont été utilisées, on remplace, dans le couteau, l'ancienne cartouche par une nouvelle cartouche.
