UTILIZATION OF SULPHUR DIOXIDE FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Gases containing high sulphur dioxide concentra- tions are used for energy production. The steps involve the conversion of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide in a catalytic converter (40, 360, 570), the reaction of sulphur trioxide with lime and/or lime- stone in a fluidized reactor (60, 410, 580), and removal of heat from the chemical reactions for utilization in the production of superheated steam. The superheated steam that is produced can be used for the generation of electricity, for operating mechanical devices, space heating, lime production, construction materials curing, and heat exchange processes.
