A brace structure for a joist system having plural adjacent joists. First portions, preferably lower portions, of the joists are connected and supported by a horizontal chord. A pair of diagonal braces extend away from a central portion of the chord to second portions, preferably upper portions, of the adjacent joists. The diagonal braces preferably abut each other at the chord to form a V shaped structure with the vertex of the V at the chord and the arms of the V terminating at the joists. The braces, chord and joists are fixed to each other as by nailing where they meet.
