A device for cutting hair has a casing that defines a dovetail shaped chamber, an outlet that both communicates with the chamber and a vacuum source, and an instrument manually operable for cutting hair strands that extend into the chamber via the inlet. In the preferred embodiments, the cutting instrument is a pair of scissors with the blades disposed within the chamber but operable from without the chamber. In all embodiments, the instrument is a pair of scissors with the cutting blades extending into the chamber through a rear opening while the levers for operating the blades remain outside the chamber for manual manipulation by an operator's hand. In the first through third embodiments, the cutting chamber outlet is also an elongated, preferably curved, handle disposed above the cutting instrument. In the fourth and fifth embodiments, the levers of the cutting instruments are offset from their respective blades to allow the chamber outlet to be disposed below the levers. Also, a wide variety of spacers, some angled, are selectively attached to the inlets of all the embodiments to regulate the length and taper to which hair is cut.
