Vacuum insulating and construction materials are provided by either sealing a first article preformed as a gas-impervious tray (11) of a multiplicity of open-sided compartments (13) with a second gas-impervious article (15) sufficient to enclose the open-sided compartments as gas-impervious individual compartments or preparing a gas-impervious tubular filament with sealed ends in an environment of less than atmosphere pressure or encapsulating articles having gas-porous enclosing walls in a gas-impervious material while in an environment of less than atmospheric pressure. On being moved into an environment of atmospheric pressure, the internal chambers of the gas- impervious articles retain their vacuum quality.

On obtient des matériaux de construction isolant par le vide soit en obturant un premier article préformé sous la forme d'un bac (11) en matériau étanche aux gaz, comportant une multiplicité de compartiments (13) à côtés ouverts, avec un deuxième article (15) étanche aux gaz permettant de fermer ces compartiments à côtés ouverts pour faire qu'ils soient étanches aux gaz, soit en préparant un filament tubulaire étanche aux gaz qui comporte des extrémités scellées, dans un environement à pression sub-atmosphérique, soit en enrobant des articles présentant des parois d'obturation poreuses aux gaz, dans un matériau étanche aux gaz, dans un environement à pression sub-atmosphérique. Déplacés dans un environement à pression atmosphérique, les cavités de ces articles étanches aux gaz gardent les qualités dues à leur vide.
