A suction inlet for a central vacuum system of a building includes a housing capable of being mounted on the floor of a building in a fixed position and defining a slot along the floor. Slot can be opened and closed and simultaneously a vacuum duct connected to the housing is opened and closed by a plug member. When the plug and the slot are opened, an electrical switch actuates the central vacuum system to draw air into the housing through the slot across the floor so that dust, dirt and debris on the floor can simply be swept into the slot and drawn away. The plug member can be moved to the open position by a foot operated lever that pivots about a pivot point on the housing. The plug member is biased towards a closed position where it prevents dust and dirt from being drawn through said housing and into said vacuum duct.
