Vacuum Processing of Particulate Reactive Metal Abstract In the particular embodiments described in the spec- ification, a vacuum furnace includes a hearth (13) having a melting region (10) and a refining region (19) and a particulate metal supply tube (26) for conveying particu- late metal (25) to one side of the melting region. Three water-cooled shield members (28) surround the other sides of the melting region so that metal (27) ejected from the particulate metal (25) deposited in the melting region (19) by explosive vaporization of inclusions in the metal is intercepted by the shield members (28).
