ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a rimless contraceptive devise especially adapted for use within the vaginal cavity, which has a thickened area to provide vaginal retaining means, said device comprising: (1) a back, and (2) a front face joined to the back so as to form a container which holds a spermicide comprising an aqueous solution of a micelle-forming spermicidal surfactant compound of a concentration at or above its critical micelle concentration. The back may be and preferably is, dish- shaped, and has one or more thickened, reinforced areas to provide vaginal retaining means. The front face constitutes a semi-permeable membrane. The device is resilient, and is foldable for easy insertion into the vagina by the user. Once in position in the vagina the device opens to "cap" the cervical os and remains in position for extended periods of time. The device can be worn comfortably by the user. Controlled release of a spermicidal surfactant is provided over a prolonged period of time, so as to provide maximum contraceptive protection.
