A B S T R A C T One of the problems commonly associated with needle valves is the danger of the valve coming apart in response to rotation of the needle valve to the open position. This problem is overcome by the present invention in which a travel body is threadedly mounted in its valve stem passage so as to tighten against the main body of the valve in response to rotation in a first direction and to be releasable in response to rotation in a second direction. The valve stem is threadedly mounted in the travel - body for rotation relative to the travel body so as to close the through passage by movement towards the valve seat in response to rotation in said second direction and to open the valve passage in response to rotation in the first direction. A packing lock nut is mounted on the valve stem and adapted to threadedly engage the travel body for rotation in the first direction into locking engagement with the travel body and rotation in the second direction to be released from the travel body. Packing is provided on the valve stem between the travel body in the packing lock nut for scaling the valve stem when the packing lock nut is locked with respect to the travel body.
