A valve assembly for a fluid filter assembly having a plunger (38) with openings (45) defined therein. The plunger includes a sealing portion (48) and a non-sealing portion (50). The non-sealing portion (50) includes an opening (45) which leads to a central passage (94) through the plunger (38), the opening (45) and central passage (96) cooperating to direct the flow of fluid through the plunger (38).
