ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A retrievable check valve for use in an oil or gas well includes a casing defined by two body sections, which are held together by shear pins, and a mandrel slidably mounted in the casing for movement between a lower position in which the ball-shaped lower end of the mandrel engages an annular seat to close the valve, and an upper, open position, and shear pins extending through the mandrel and slots in the casing, so that the mandrel is releasably, slidably mounted in the casing. In order to remove the valve, an upward force is exerted on the mandrel. If the valve remains stuck, the shear pins connecting the mandrel to the casing break to release the mandrel. One casing section can also be removed from the well by breaking of the other shear pins.
