ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A valve inserting apparatus for an internal combustion engine of the type with which a cylinder head of an engine is supported by a jig means such that its surface on a combustion chamber side is positioned to be the upside and a longitudinal axis of a valve guide assembled on the cylinder head is main- tained vertical so that a valve is inserted into the valve guide from thereabove including a valve inserting unit adapted to be driven to move upwardly and downwardly and a valve holding means for holding the valve with its head portion upside to allow the valve to be detachable and slightly swingable, a valve push-in means, and a suction means adapted to move into and out of con- tact with a lower end of said valve guide, in which the push-in means comprises an upwardly and downwardly movable push rod hav- ing a weight attached to the upper end portion thereof which abuts on a head portion of the valve from above and the valve inserting unit has a first detecting means for detecting whether or not the push rod is at a position higher than a reference position, namely a lowered position of the push rod at the time when the push rod is in abutment on the valve when the valve inserting unit has been lowered to a predetermined position to have a lower end of the valve inserted into an upper end of the valve guide to a predetermined depth.
