ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A valve operating mechanism for an internal combustion engine is described which includes a valve activating cam follower linkage and an elongate cam having a profile in contact with the valve activating cam follower linkage. The valve activating cam follower linkage follows the cam profile upon rotation of the cam. The elongate cam has a first end and a second end. The profile of the cam varies between the first end and the second end thereby providing multiple rotational contact profiles. Upon relative axial movement of the elongate cam and the valve activating cam follower linkage selections of alternative rotational contact profiles are effected.
