Case 232S ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A valve seat structure for an expanding type gate valve. A valve seat is received in each annular seat recess formed around the upstream and downstream flow passages and opening to the valve chamber wherein a gate assembly is movable between open and closed positions. An annular face seal is mounted within an annular groove in the front seat face of each valve seat. A substantial portion of the bottom of the annular groove comprises a frusto-conical bottom portion which forms a wedging surface with a cone angle in the range of approximately 30° to 60° and disposed substantially coaxial with the groove sides and the flow passages. The rear seal face of the face seal has a frusto-conical rear portion that conforms to the frusto-conical bottom portion. The annular groove is wider than the thickness of the face seal so that the face seal loosely fits within the annular groove. The front seal face extends beyond the front seat face a dis- tance in the range between approximately .0051 cm and .0381 cm when loosely seated in the annular groove. When the gate assembly is expanded to the open or closed positions, the front seal face engages the gate assembly and the annular face seal is axially compressed to effect a seal. In the closed position, fluid pressure in the upstream flow passage causes the annular seal to wedge against the frusto-conical bottom portion towards the gate assembly whereby the sealing relationship between the annu- lar face seal with the gate assembly and frusto-conical bottom portion increases with increasing fluid pressure. When the gate assembly moves to the collapsed condition, the up- stream annular face seal moves toward the gate assembly and as fluid pressure equalizes on both sides of the face seal effects a wiping relationship with the gate assembly without causing back wedging thereof.
