A damper is shown for damping the movements of a valve spring in an engine. The damper comprises a body that is adapted to fit over the bottom end of a valve spring or, in another embodiment, within the body of a valve spring. The damper body comprises a plurality of slots in the side wall of the body creating a plurality of wall sections. The slots can be angled at a predetermined angle away from the axis of the body. Where the damper is placed over the bottom end of the valve spring at least one spring steel ring is wrapped around the damper body and seated into a groove in the damper body side wall. The ring is available in a number of configurations having concavo-convex dimples or indentations that are adapted to create enhanced pressure points on the sidewall of the damper body and hence modify the frictional engagement between the outside wall of the valve spring and the inside surface of the damper sidewall.
