A vapor compression refrig-eration and freezer system (10) in-cludes a compressor (12), a con-denser (14), an expansion device and an evaporator (16) which includes an evaporator coil having an inlet and an outlet which coil is in heat ex-change relation with an air medium along substantially the entire coil length. The inlet to the evaporator coil is in flow communication with an outlet of the expansion device via an evaporator feedline (28). The ex-pansion device can include a multi--functional valve (18) that cooperates with the evaporator feedline (28) to supply the evaporator coil inlet with a mixture of refrigerant vapor and liquid at a linear velocity and with relative amounts of vapor and liquid which are sufficient to provide effi-cient heat transfer along substantially the entire length of the coil, substan-tially reducing the build-up of frost on the evaporator coil and enabling the system to be operated without re-quiring a defrosting cycle over a sub-stantially increased number of op-erating cycles compared to conven-tional refrigeration and freezer sys-tems operating at the same cooling load and evaporating temperature conditions.
L'invention concerne un système (10) de congélation et de réfrigération à compression de vapeur, comprenant un compresseur (12), un condensateur (14), un dispositif d'expansion, et un évaporateur (16) pourvu d'un serpentin d'évaporateur possédant une entrée et une sortie, ledit serpentin échangeant de la chaleur avec l'air sensiblement sur toute la longueur dudit serpentin. L'entrée du serpentin d'évaporateur est en communication fluidique avec une sortie du dispositif d'expansion via une ligne d'alimentation (28) d'évaporateur. Le dispositif d'expansion peut comprend une soupape multifonctionnelle (18) qui coopère avec la ligne d'alimentation (28) de l'évaporateur, afin d'alimenter ledit évaporateur avec un mélange de liquide et de vapeur réfrigérants, selon une vitesse linéaire et dans des quantités relatives de liquide et de vapeur, suffisantes pour effectuer un transfert thermique efficace sensiblement sur toute la longueur du serpentin, ce qui réduit sensiblement l'accumulation de givre sur le serpentin d'évaporateur, et permet au système de fonctionner sans recours à un cycle de dégivrage au cours d'un nombre sensiblement accru de cycles de fonctionnement, par rapport aux systèmes de congélation et de réfrigération fonctionnant avec les mêmes conditions de charge de refroidissement et de température d'évaporation.
