ABSTRACT A method for controlling the rate of evaporation or rate of release of a perfume from an absorbent sub- strate in a continous action air freshener comprising in- corporating into the perfume from 10 to 900% by weight based on the weight of the perfume of a vapor control agent selected from the group consisting of nonionic sur- factants having an average of from 1 to 5 moles of ethy- lene oxide per molecule, a compound having the structure: Image wherein m and n are intigers, the same or different, sel- ected from 1 to 4, and R is an alkyl group having from 12 to 18 carbon atoms, a compound having the structure: Image wherein m and n are intigers, the same or different, sel- ected from 1 to 4, and R is an alkyl group having from 12 to 18 carbon atoms, and mixtures thereof. The use of the above agents controls the rate of release of volatile per- fumes from absorbent substrates so as to prevent the pre- mature evaporation of the perfumes to provide acceptable product life.
